Can a Colic Baby Have Newborn Photos Taken?

·

·

(Spoiler: Yes, absolutely — with the right care and experience.)

If you’re the parent of a colicky baby, you’re probably navigating a tough season filled with tears (theirs and maybe yours too), long nights, and a whole lot of soothing. The idea of scheduling a newborn photoshoot might feel overwhelming — or even impossible.

You might be wondering:

Can my colicky baby actually get newborn photos taken? Will they cry the whole time? Will it be stressful for everyone?

Let me gently reassure you:
Yes — colicky babies can have a successful, beautiful newborn session.
And as a professional photographer with years of experience and over 100 babies photographed, I’m here to make that possible.

What Is Colic, Exactly?

Colic is generally defined as frequent, prolonged crying in an otherwise healthy baby — often peaking around 6 weeks of age and resolving on its own by 3–4 months. The cause is still somewhat mysterious, but it’s very common and completely normal.

While colic can make certain parts of early parenting harder, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on capturing those fleeting newborn moments.

How I Support Colicky Babies in My Studio

Here’s how I make sessions comfortable and successful — even for babies who are extra sensitive or fussy:

🕊 A Calm, Baby-Led Environment

My studio is designed to be quiet, cozy, and calming — the perfect setting to soothe a little one. We follow your baby’s lead entirely. There’s no rush and no pressure. If they need a break, we take it. If they want to be held for most of the session, we adjust.

🤱 Parent-Comfort-Focused

Sometimes a colicky baby is most settled in mom or dad’s arms — and that’s okay. Some of the most tender, meaningful photos are those real moments of comfort, closeness, and love.

🍼 Extra Time Built In

Colicky babies may need longer to settle — and that’s expected. My newborn sessions are never rushed. I pad in extra time for feeding, cuddling, or just letting baby calm in your arms.

🛏️ Wrapped Sessions Are Ideal

Because colicky babies are often more sensitive to touch or handling, they may become stressed with frequent posing or being placed on the posing table. That’s why I highly recommend an all-wrapped newborn session for colicky babies. Wrapping helps babies feel secure and soothed — similar to being swaddled at home — and it allows us to get beautiful, peaceful images without unnecessary stress for baby (or parents).

💛 Experience & Patience

As a mom myself, and with over 5 years of experience photographing babies of all temperaments, I’ve learned how to read baby cues, pivot gently, and work with each little one’s needs — not against them.

What Can You Expect from a Session?

The final gallery may look a little different than a typical sleepy, posed session — and that’s okay. You’ll still receive heartfelt, beautiful images that reflect your baby’s story just as they are. Wrapped comfort shots, parent cuddles, and close-ups of those precious little details can be just as powerful (and even more meaningful).

And years from now, you’ll look back and be so grateful you didn’t wait.
Because these moments — even the hard ones — deserve to be remembered.

Final Thoughts

If you’re in the middle of colic, I see you. It’s tough, but it won’t last forever. And you don’t have to miss out on documenting this chapter.

Yes, your colicky baby can absolutely have newborn photos taken — safely, gently, and beautifully.
You just need the right photographer who knows how to support you both with patience and care.
