Dry Skin in Newborns — What Helped Us in Calgary’s Dry Climate

If you’ve just welcomed your baby and noticed their skin is peeling, cracking, or super dry — you’re not alone, especially here in Alberta where the air is so dry year-round.

When my little one was born, her skin was incredibly dry — at first, we were told it was normal. Like many parents, we were advised by our midwife not to put anything on her skin unless necessary. She even suggested trying breast milk, which is gentle and full of natural healing properties.

But as time went on, her dryness got worse — to the point where it started cracking and bleeding from the itchiness. It broke my heart.

Eventually, after checking in again, we decided to try a baby-safe lotion. We ended up using Tubby Todd, and it made such a difference! Her skin finally started to heal, and we felt more confident knowing we found something gentle and effective.

What to do if your newborn has dry skin in Alberta:

  1. Talk to your doctor or midwife first.
Always check with your care provider before applying anything to your newborn’s skin.
  2. Try breast milk first.
It’s natural, gentle, and often recommended as a first step.
  3. Watch for signs of irritation.
If your baby’s skin is cracking, bleeding, or causing discomfort, reach out for medical advice.
  4. Use baby-safe products if needed.
We personally had a great experience with Tubby Todd (not sponsored — just mama-to-mama advice!).

Every baby is different, and what works for one might not work for another — but you’re doing amazing, and your little one is lucky to have you caring so much. 💛

Have questions about what to dress baby in for photo sessions with dry skin? I’m happy to help with that too!
